The top bone of the arm that runs from the shoulder to the elbow is called the humerus. Any part of the bone can break, however humerus fractures often happen at either end of the bone, close to the shoulder or elbow. Fractures of the proximal humerus can affect the growth plate and happen close to the shoulder. Surgery is rarely necessary because most of the time we can modify this area of the bone. These fractures are often treated with shoulder slings or shoulder immobilizers for somewhere between four and six weeks because a cast is unable to cover over the shoulder. Normal range of motion is then permitted, however it can take longer for your youngster to resume full-fledged activities. Direct blows to the side of the arm frequently result in fractures of the humerus's shaft, or midportion. They may develop as a result of a previously undiagnosed cyst that has damaged the nearby bone. If alignment is satisfactory, they can be treated with long-arm casts and then further protected with specific types of braces (like a Sarmiento brace), which will enable some range of motion while still protecting the fracture while it heals.
