Joint Replacement Surgery
What is Joint Replacement Surgery?
When a joint has lost its cartilage due to various reasons, there is no lubrication left and there is bone-to-bone contact, which causes pain and ultimately damage to the bone with muscular imbalance and mechanical and dynamic instability. At one point the only option is to get the joint replaced and lead a pain-free life.
A) Total Knee Replacement/ Partial Knee Replacement- TKR is indicated for severe knee arthritis with severe pain which is disabling the patient and hampering the patient's daily life and activities of daily living. It is no longer a complex and tedious surgery and with the introduction of robotics in this field revolutionary changes are eminent.
B) Total Hip Replacement/ Hemireplacement- Most common reason for Hip Replacement is Osteoarthritis of the hip joint which can be either Primary or Secondary to AVN femoral head or other causes eg: congenital abnormities, fractures, Perthes, etc. It's also indicated for some fractures around the Hip joint. Half Replacement (Hemiarthroplasty) is also indicated for fracture of the neck or femur or trochanter fracture in old age patients.
Replacement surgeries improve mobility and reduce pain so that patients lead pain-free life.
C) Shoulder Replacement Surgery- This is indicated for osteoarthritis around the joint, some badly comminuted fractures around the shoulder, rotator cuff arthropathy, etc.
